As the year 2020 came to a close, the navigation and maps app category witnessed varied performance trends across the top applications in the United Kingdom. Sensor Tower's data sheds light on these trends, offering a glimpse into the user engagement and preferences during the fourth quarter.

Google Maps Go experienced fluctuations in downloads, peaking at 71K in mid-October and then tapering off to 61K by the end of December. Weekly active users followed a similar trend, starting at approximately 9.2M in late September and experiencing a slight decline to 8.2M towards the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Google Earth maintained a more stable download pattern, hovering around the mid-30K mark throughout the quarter, with a slight uptick to around 34K in the final weeks. Active users saw a modest increase from 252K in late September to 257K by year's end.

Waze Navigation & Live Traffic observed a decline in downloads from 35K in late September to 20K at the end of December. Weekly active users, however, showed resilience, starting at 2.7M and slightly increasing to 2.3M during the same period.

The UK's own what3words: Navigation & Maps showcased an interesting trajectory. With downloads starting at 29K in September and initially declining to 23K by early November, the app saw a dramatic surge to 88K in the final week of December. Active users reflected this surge, growing from 154K to 277K in the same timeframe.

Lastly, GPS, Maps, Voice Navigation presented a mixed picture, with downloads decreasing from 10K in late September to 6.3K at the close of the quarter. The app's active users experienced a dip in November, falling to 22.8K, but recovered to some extent, reaching nearly 25K by the end of December.
